And while the tragedy was indeed a little abrupt, as Dean himself points out, without the "plot armour" this is what the Winchesters' fate would have been years ago. The Dean who goes up against a superstrong vampire is not the one who is protected by Chuck's need for constant drama- he is a normal hunter who is overpowered by a monster immensely stronger than him. So, in the finale, no matter how badass the Winchesters are, they are just regular hunters who face deadly danger on a daily basis. But instead, he hops away to Heaven and Sam, sticking by the promise he made to his brother, gets on with his life. As Dean's death takes place halfway through the episode, many were still holding out hope that being buddies with the new God would mean that he is brought back to life. And for a second it feels like the Winchesters have it under control only for a juiced-up vamp to push Dean against a post with a rather sharp piece of rebar protruding from it, impaling him. They soon catch a new case- a nest of vampires killing families and abducting their kids. They are happy, if not entirely content with life. And after shuffling off his own mortal coil, he reunites with Dean in the show’s final scene to spend the rest of eternity. With Chuck gone, the boys are back to their hunting ways, but this time without a cruel Almighty navigating their story for his entertainment.

It led to a teary farewell and Sam telling him, “It’s OK. It was Dean, the loose cannon with an appetite for fast food – and the best character on TV, no arguments will be allowed at this time – who went first, dying after being impaled by a large rusty nail while fighting some child-nabbing vamp mimes. 'Supernatural': Misha Collins reacts to episode with Castiel, Dean bombshell 'We gave it everything': 'Supernatural' stars reflect on CW's series finale and 15-year legacy It’s a miracle, in a way, that we got Dean (Jensen Ackles) and his younger brother Sam ( Jared Padalecki) for so long, and that they ended up in the heaven they both deserved after a life spent fighting everything from things that go bump in the night to biblically cosmic foes. It was one heck of a ride for which we all got to sit shotgun, as the Winchester boys killed vampires, demons and various other monsters as well as every possible chance at cancellation, on WB (where it premiered in 2005) and its successor CW.

But for someone who spent those 15 seasons with “Supernatural” closer to their heart than any other TV show had ever been, it was a mostly satisfying ending for two heroes who spawned a loyal fandom and, for yours truly, got me through a dark time in my own life.
